The challenge

Hugo Boss's UAE retail operations needed HR and payroll processes that satisfy the Wage Protection System under UAE labour law, every month, without exception. Retail payroll carries its own logic, from shift patterns to store-level variations, and the manual processes in place did not scale with the estate or leave a clean audit trail. Salary disbursement had to integrate with group banking through HSBC rather than run as a separate manual step, and the platform had to be one the regional HR team could own and extend as the business grew. Every missed or malformed WPS file is a compliance event with the Ministry, so the tolerance for error was zero from the first payroll run.

What we built

Twelve specialists ran a six-month implementation. The first month was assessment and requirements. Months two and three configured Zoho People for the employee lifecycle and Zoho Payroll with custom workflows for the retail logic, while we built a custom WPS engine that produces compliant salary files automatically. Months four and five integrated payment execution through HSBC's banking APIs and put the whole flow through staged testing. Month six was go-live and optimisation. A compliance framework sits across the platform so that validation happens in the system rather than in a spreadsheet the night before payday.

What remains

Payroll runs compliant and on time each month, with automated validation in place of manual checking and processing time cut significantly. HR operations moved from spreadsheets to a system the regional team owns. What remains is audit readiness by default: WPS files that generate themselves, bank integration that leaves a record, and a platform that scales with the next store rather than the next hire in HR. The month of assessment before configuration began is the part most implementations skip; here it is why the retail-specific workflows worked on the first live run.
